Stainless Steel Grade – UNS S31254

Wedge Washer® UNS S31254 washers are made to UNS S31254 / 1.4547, commonly known as 254 SMO, and surface hardened to ≥700HV0.1. This grade is specified where extreme corrosion resistance is needed, particularly in chloride-rich environments such as seawater. With a pitting resistance equivalent number (PREN) of 45, it is well suited to marine equipment, desalination plants, and offshore oil and gas platforms, as well as pulp and paper bleaching plants and chemical processing for flue gas cleaning and handling aggressive acids. Typical applications include heat exchangers, piping, pumps, valves, condensers, and scrubbers. Suitable for use with fasteners up to A4-80, with an operating temperature range of -256°F to 932°F (-160°C to 500°C). Available in standard and large outside diameter (LD) versions from M3 to M39.

How It Works

How It Works

Wedge Washer® is designed to prevent bolted joints from loosening under vibration and dynamic loading by using a mechanical locking principle.

Each washer set is supplied as a pre-assembled pair. The outer faces feature hardened serrations that grip into the bolt head, nut, and joint surface during tightening.

The inner faces feature angled cams with a cam angle steeper than the thread pitch. Once tightened, any loosening force must act through these cam faces, creating a wedge effect that increases clamp load rather than reducing it.

The joint can only be released by deliberate untightening, forcing the cams over one another. No re-tightening is required.

Common Questions

Do I need one Wedge Washer or two?

It depends on the joint. If the connection is blind and the fastener can only loosen in one direction, a single Wedge Washer is required. For a through-bolted joint where loosening could occur from either side, two Wedge Washers are required, one under the bolt head and one under the nut.

1/5
What torque should I use with these washers?

There is no single torque value suitable for every application. Material strength, friction, clamping length, and embedment all influence the final result. When using stainless materials we always recommend using a lubricant to avoid thread galling. Tightening torque and clamp load guidelines for grades A2 and A4 fasteners are provided in the Wedge Washer® brochure. Each critical bolted joint should be analyzed individually by a design engineer.

2/5
What is 254 SMO and when should I specify it?

254 SMO is the common name for UNS S31254 / 1.4547. It is used where extreme corrosion resistance is needed, especially in chloride-rich environments like seawater. With a pitting resistance equivalent number of PREN 45, it offers significantly higher pitting resistance than Grade 316L (PREN 27), making it suitable for marine equipment, desalination plants, offshore platforms, and chemical processing involving aggressive acids.

3/5
How do I verify a Wedge Washer is functioning correctly?

Tighten the joint to the specified torque, then mark a vertical line across the bolt head or nut, both washer halves, and the mating surface. Untighten the joint. If functioning correctly, the line on the mating surface remains aligned with the contacting washer half, while the line on the bolt head or nut separates. This confirms serration engagement and cam function.
