Delta Expansion

CHALLENGE: LaGuardia Airport is one of New York’s major air travel hubs, largely accommodating domestic travel across the United States through major American airlines such as American Airlines and Delta Airlines. As part of a multi-billion dollar reconstruction project, the Delta Airlines Terminal was being expanded, a massive undertaking complicated by the fact that the work needed to be done while the airport was operational, meaning it had to be safe and non-disruptive for patrons. The work that needed to be done was connecting steel components for a curtain wall installation. Because the construction needed to be conducted in the presence of the public, it was crucial that non-disruptive connection methods were implemented, meaning welding was out of the question. Drilling was also impossible since the airport needed to remain operational during construction.

SOLUTION: A less obtrusive solution needed to be found because welding and drilling could not be done without creating safety concerns and disrupting the airport’s daily operations. The lack of drilling meant BoxBolts wouldn’t work, and the length of space between the steel components was relatively large, meaning a composite solution needed to be created if a successful, unobtrusive connection was to be made. The answer came in the form of LNA-supplied BeamClamps. True to their name, they can clamp steel components together without the need for drilling. However, to bridge the wide gaps between the steel I-beams, LNA supplied Spacers or Packing Pieces were needed to ensure a tense connection could still be established despite the distance. In the end, not being able to drill or weld ended up saving the project time and money, while the BeamClamp Spacer combination proved the perfect solution that accommodated all the needs of this condition-filled project.
